Since January 1, 2008, the Institute for Sea Fischeries is one of 15 Institutes in the newly created Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries (vTI).

The Institute for Sea fisheries is committed to supply sound scientific support for the rational management of living marine resources and marine ecosystems to the benefit of future generations, and to secure a sustainable basis for the sea fishing industry.
Priorities of the Institute
  • To produce objective state-of-the-art assessment and advice on population developments of commercially valuable resources in the North Sea, North Atlantic and the Antarctic
  • To evaluate effects of fishing on commercial species and impact of fisheries on the environment and the ecosystem, based on long term, regular monitoring
  • To investigate the ecology of fish assemblages and aspects of marine biodiversity in the various ecosystems
  • To provide scientific information for the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and other stakeholders in the fishing industry and marine environment community
