Since January 1, 2008, the former Federal Research Centre for Fisheries is part of the newly created Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute of Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries (vTI).

is charged by the Federal Ministry for Food, Agricuture and Consumer protection with conducting applied multidisciplinary research in fisheries and related sciences.

... as a center of competence for fish and fisheries
The four institutes of the FRC for fisheries - the Institute for Sea Fisheries, the Institute for Fisheries Ecology, the Institute for Fishery Tecnology and Fishery Economics, and the Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries in Rostock - carry out multidisciplinary cooperative work in the natural science disciplines of fishery biology, marine biology oceanography, marine chemistry, chemistry, and physics. The institutes therefore represent a center of competence for fish and fisheries with its focus on the marine region.

... in policy advice
A large fraction of the research work and coordination carried out by the FRC for Fishery is directly related to commitments of Germany in international marine conventions and under regulations and directives.

... in collection of long-term data serials
An understanding of the population dynamics of the principal exploited species, and of the relationships and interactions in aquatic ecosystems, form the scientific basis for the management and conservation of fisheries resources.
