On Jannuary 1, 2008, the workinggroups of the former Institute for Fishing Technology and Fishery Economics are parts of different Institutes in the newly created Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries (vTI). The workinggroup Fishing Technology is a part of the Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries The workinggroup Hydroacoustic and the workinggroup Fishery Economics are parts of the Institute for Sea Fisheries
The research of the Institute for Fishing Technology and Fishery Economics (IFF) is carried out under the aspects of stock conservation, environment protection and energy saving.
The applied-orientated research of the IFF deals with hydroacoustic assessment of fish stocks, their technical utilization, first processing at sea, analysis of components and further processing.
Adaptation and development of methods for stock assessment and population dynamics
Development and improvement of selective, environment friendly and energy saving fishing techniques and gear
Estimation of fishing effort and its relation to technical data of fishing vessels as well as development of methods for controlling the fishing power at sea
Investigation of fishery economic questions. In the future, the new research department of Fishery Economics will analyze and evaluate how technical procedures economically affect the commercial fishery.
