European Association of Fish Pathologists
The objectives of the newly formed Association were defined as the promotion of the exchange of knowledge on, and assistance in the co-ordination of research related to fish and shellfish pathology. To this end it was intended that the Association would organise the publication of a regular newsletter.
Enhanced Actinide Removal Plant (Sellafield)
Fallender Wasserspiegel an Küsten mit Tidenhub (siehe Gezeiten). Der tiefste Wasserstand heißt Niedrigwasser.
EBS

European Fish Aging Network
The European Fish Aging Network (EFAN) is a Concerted Action of the European Commission (DG-Fish) which was founded in 1996 with a project duration of 4 years. The coordinator of the CA is Dr. Erlend Moksness from the IMR in Norway. A great number of European Nations have joined the CA to improve the quality of age readings for assessment and to harmonise the research activities on otolith annuli-formation. Further information available at www.efan.no. Dr. C. Hammer is the agency's representative to EFAN.
European Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Organisation
EFARO is an EFARO is an association composed by the Directors of the main European Research Institute involved in the Fisheries and Aquaculture research and the Directorate General "Fish" of the European Union. It was founded under a consensus agreement.

European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission
The European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission has served since 1957 as the only international forum for collaboration and information exchange among all European countries and for advice to member Governments on the management of inland fisheries and aquaculture.
Für größere Schiffe wurde das "Einboot-Schwimmschleppnetz" entwickelt, das durch spezielle hydrodynamisch gut geformte Scherbretter offen gehalten wird.

The area has been fished commercially for finfish between 1978/79 and 1988/89. Most fishing effort was exerted in the first four season while fishing afterwards occurred only sporadically. The main target species were mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) and marbled notothenia (Notothenia rossii). The Federal Research Centre for Fisheries in Hamburg started to investigate fish around Elephant Island in 1977/78. 35-40 hauls per survey provided information on the state of stocks and aspects of their biology, such as age and growth, reproduction and food and feeding. Further surveys were conducted in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1996. Since 1998 these surveys are carried out in close collaboration with Southwest Fisheries Science Centre in La Jolla (USA). The surveys were extended to the whole Elephant Island-South Shetland Island region since 1998. Further surveys are planned for March and December 2001. Survey vessels will be RV 'Yuzhmorgeologiya' (March 2001) and RV 'Polarstern' (December 2001). A large number of papers have been published. Reprints (copies) are available through Dr. K.-H. Kock or Dr. V. Siegel.
Antarctic krill data have been collected since 1978 by German surveys or by international cooperations around Elephant Island and the Northern South Shetland Islands. They contribute to the understanding of short- and long-term fluctuations of the stocks in the Antarctic Peninsula area. Data are collected on an annual basis but they also cover most of the seasonal cycle. This allows the study of seasonal as well as interannual aspects in krill demography and population dynamics. Recent evidence indicates that an annual survey coverage is necessary to fully understand the linkages between the environment, krill, and top predators. These questions are of complex nature and require a large amount of data collected in a standardised way to allow direct comparisons between data sets. The German krill data have been collected over the years in the same area (around Elephant Island) with standard gear and standard methods for net sampling procedures as well as for sample handling and measuring and staging krill. These allow interannual comparison of quantitative aspects of krill demography and population dynamics. The investigations around Elephant Island were carried out during austral summer, the main spawning season for the Antarctic krill. About 80 established standard stations were generally covered along north-south transects. The plankton net RMT1+8 was used as standard gear to collect krill samples from the upper 200 m surface layer. Biological parameters such as sex ratio, age composition and maturity stage development are usually determined from each sample. These data are analysed as part of the CCAMLR (Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) related research activities of the Seafisheries Research Institute. Results are routinely reported to the CCAMLR Working Group on Ecosystem Monitoring and Management (WG EMM).
Sampling of oceanographic data on stratification and currents off Elephant Island started in early February 1976. Current measurements from moored systems was performed during 1977/1978. Those results indicated currents in the vicinity of Elephant Island heading into 68°T at a mean speed of 11 cm/sec. CTD measurements on a meso scale grid around Elephant Island commenced during the 1977/1978 survey and were continued thereafter during most of the Krill surveys. The most prominent oceanographic feature of the region is the Weddell/Scotia Confluence which denotes the confluence of cold, saline water masses of Weddell Sea origin and warmer low saline water masses of Antarctic Circumpolar Current origin. The position of this water mass boundary is seasonally variable. Members of the institutes involved: Dr. K.-H. Kock, Dr. V. Siegel, M. Stein.

EUROFISH is an independent international organisation which became operational in 2002, succeeding the FAO EASTFISH project established in 1996. The mandate of EUROFISH is to assist the development of fisheries in Central and Eastern Europe focusing on trade and marketing, processing, and aquaculture. http://www.eurofish.dk/
